Pretoria - The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is on standby to provide humanitarian assistance to flood victims in the Vhembe District Municipality in Limpopo.
The municipality is one of those that were declared a disaster area by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
The Provincial Disaster Management Committee is currently assessing the situation.
The SANDF members will provide over 300 food parcels to the flood-ravaged victims in the Vhembe areas. An Oryx helicopter from the South African Air Force is on standby to fly the angels in uniform to the district municipality.
Other provinces declared as disaster areas are Gauteng, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape and Limpopo.
Government has prioritised humanitarian relief, the repair and upgrading of public infrastructure, agricultural relief in the form of equipment, livestock and crops and repairs to damaged houses.
