Pretoria - The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has sent condolences to families and friends of four of its members who died in a car accident on Wednesday.
At the time of the accident, twelve members of the South African Air Force's 506 Protection Squadron, based at Air Force Base Bloemspruit in Bloemfontein, were on their way to Durban on an official duty. Five members are still in hospital, while three others were treated and discharged.
According to the department, the accident happened ten kilometres outside Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal. Department of Defence and Military Veteran spokesperson, Siphiwe Dlamini, told BuaNews that police were investigating the cause of the accident.
Names of the deceased members will be released after their next of kin have been informed.
Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Lindiwe Sisulu, the acting Chief of the South African National Defence Force, Lieutenant General Themba Matanzima and Chief of the South African Air Force, Lieutenant General Carlo Gagiano, have expressed their heartfelt condolences to families and friends of the deceased as well as to families and friends of those injured in the accident.
