Pretoria - A KwaZulu-Natal senior health official is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court today following his arrest on Monday for fraud and corruption charges.

The official, who is a Security Manager, was arrested by the SAPS Commercial Crimes Unit, when he went to the department's office to attend a disciplinary hearing. He had been placed on suspension for transgressions related to fraud and corruption.

The arrest follows intensified antifraud and corruption efforts by the department in 2009. To date the efforts have seen a number of senior officials being fired, resigning or arrested.

Provincial Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said the department was improving accountability, efficiency and effective administration within the department including decision-making and management conduct which promotes integrity.

"Since the launch of this campaign, we are encouraging a culture where all employees, the public and other stakeholders continuously behave with, and promote integrity in their dealings with, or on behalf of the department," Dr Dhlomo said.
