Pretoria – Residents of the City of Johannesburg will now pay seven percent more for electricity.
In April this year, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) issued municipal guidelines for tariff increases.
In line with these guidelines and within the increases approved by the Mayoral Committee and City Council, City Power -- Johannesburg’s electricity company -- applied for a seven percent tariff increase to Nersa, which was approved.
The demand side management levy has been reduced from 2c/kWh to 1c/kWh to alleviate the burden on the customers. Prepaid business customers are charged from 1kWh, while prepaid domestic customers are charged only from above 500kWh.
Addressing the media in Johannesburg on Wednesday, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Infrastructure Services and Environment, Matshidiso Mfikoe, cautioned members of the public to use electricity sparingly.
Mfikoe said the City accepts the approval from Nersa and will continue to engage with the regulatory body to ensure that future tariffs are rationalised and are more compliant with industry and regulatory benchmarks. – SAnews.gov.za
