Pretoria - Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale has signed a delivery agreement with all nine MECs as part of the overall performance agreement he signed with President Jacob Zuma in April last year.
"These agreements are a contract amongst us to demonstrate that we are together in our pursuit of providing our people with proper settlements. We are in a team. If I fall, I fall with them, if I rise, I rise with them as well," said Sexwale on Tuesday.
The agreements are based on the government's 12 priority outcomes, in which Human Settlements is Outcome 8. This outcome puts emphasis on sustainable human settlements and improved quality of household life, which is achievable through a number of interventions.
Sexwale said the signing of these agreements would ensure they remain accountable to the nation. "We are all accountable to our people and the government. We cannot fail, we should not fail," he said.
The agreements are province-specific and aligned to the national department's mission to create an environment that provides sustainable human settlements. "This creates a sense of accountability on our part, to say these are the things we want to achieve towards ensuring a better life for our people," said Sexwale.
At the same event, Sexwale, together with his MECs, washed hands to mark World Toilet Day, adding that it was important to provide this basic service to the people.
