Pretoria – North West Premier Thandi Modise has established an Executive Council (Exco) task team to oversee the implementation of a task team report, which uncovered maladministration in the Madibeng Local Municipality.
Modise made the announcement of the establishment of the task team following a special council meeting.
The task team comprises the MECs for Finance, Local Government and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements and Public Safety and Liaison. The team will ensure that investigations into reported cases of nepotism, fraud and corruption across all municipalities in the North West are speedily concluded.
The team is expected to present a progress report in the next two weeks in time for a meeting with provincial police management and the Director of Public Prosecutions to establish reasons for delays in finalising refereed cases.
The meeting will seek to guarantee that new referrals are dealt with swiftly.
“Where obstruction and resistance are encountered, Exco will not hesitate to dissolve municipalities in terms of Section 139(1) c of the Constitution. Though the approach of the Exco collective is to be even-handed, there will be no compromise with those who have benefitted in any way from corruption.
“Where fraud and corruption are uncovered, properties will be attached and people sent to jail,” said Modise on Wednesday.
A political oversight committee was also confirmed. The committee will monitor adherence to timeframes in the implementation of projects worth over R2 billion, which will be rolled out in areas with water challenges in the short to medium term.
Modise appealed to communities to give the roll out of the implementation plan a chance. She said the province will embark on a province wide road-show to address stakeholders and community representatives about the targeted intervention.
The first of the series of meetings is to be held in Madibeng next week.
The committee will also deal with challenges of sanitation as experienced in Marikana, Khuma, Ditsobotla, Delarayville and other areas in the province. – SAnews.gov.za
