Teacher suspended over sexual abuse allegations

Pretoria - A Daveyton school teacher has been placed on precautionary suspension by the Gauteng Education Department following allegations that he has been passing learners in exchange for sexual favours.

Department spokesperson Charles Phahlane said the department viewed the matter in an extremely serious light.

"The educator has been placed on precautionary suspension pending an internal disciplinary enquiry. If these allegations are true, it is outrageous that an educator would pass learners in exchange for sexual favours," Phahlane said.

The allegations emerged during a sexual abuse lecture, where a girl told the school principal that she had been raped. More girls came out with the same allegations that the teacher would tell them to stay behind after school so that he could help them with homework, but would rape them instead.

Phahlane said the department was investigating if there were other learners involved and was providing counselling support to the learner who came forward.

He appealed to learners to come forward with any information that will assist with the investigation.
