Teams make changes ahead of Tri-Nations

Durban - Gerhard Mostert will make his Springbok debut and is one of four changes to South Africa's starting XV for Saturday's Tri-Nations Test against New Zealand in Wellington.

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) said the New Stade Francais recruit will replace injured lock Flip van der Merwe in the second row.

Mostert will form a new partnership with Alistair Hargreaves, who has recovered from an abdominal strain.

Mostert arrived in Sydney from Paris on Sunday as a replacement, initially for another injured lock Johann Muller. He goes straight into the starting XV as a result of a rib cartilage injury suffered by Van der Merwe in last week's match against Australia.

"People may have forgotten that I included Gerhard in my first training squad in 2008 but he has been struggling with different injuries over the past few seasons," said Bok coach Peter de Villiers.

"He came back strongly for the Sharks this season and now circumstances have given him an opportunity to show what he can do.

"We have had a few injury challenges on this tour and last week was not a good start, but we have learnt from our game against Australia," said De Villiers.

Jean Deysel makes his first start in a different looking back row, while Danie Rossouw shifts to No 8 at the expense of Ashley Johnson, who drops to the bench.

Deysel will take Rossouw's place on the side of the scrum and Deon Stegmann is retained as the openside flank.

"There have been some frank exchanges this week and the players know what is expected of them and that this is their opportunity," added De Villiers.

Patrick Lambie, the first change in the backline, will make his first start, in place of the injured Gio Aplon at fullback.

In a tactical switch in the centres, Juan de Jongh moves to No 12 and Adi Jacobs starts at outside centre with Wynand Olivier dropping to the bench.

"Pat Lambie also gets his first start and this too is his chance to demonstrate the ability we know he has at Test level. It's a tough challenge for both of them and the rest of the young players but they have a chance to do something special here," said De Villiers.

Johnson and Olivier are joined on the bench by Odwa Ndungane, who is added to the replacements following the elevation of Lambie.

John Smit will lead the defending world champions in his 104th Test - his 78th as captain, extending his world record.

The two nations have met 81 times, with 45 wins to the All Blacks, 33 to South Africa and three draws.

On the other hand, defending champions New Zealand will be looking to maintain their Tri-Nations match winning streak since 2009.

The All Blacks also made four changes from the side that played against Fiji last week.

In the forwards, Jarrad Hoeata, who made his Test debut last week, will move to the bench making way for Samuel Whitelock who returns to the second row.

Jerome Kaino is back in his regular starting position at blindside flanker, while Adam Thomson moves to No 8, and Liam Messam to the bench.

Daniel Carter will return to the number 10 jersey. Cory Jane will play on the right wing, with Zac Guildford moving to left wing.

A key change on the bench sees Sonny Bill Williams replacing Ben Smith in the number 22 jersey - who looks set to make his first Test appearance at home.

Meanwhile, SARU management again responded to claims that the injured Boks that were left behind are in a secret training camp.

SARU CEO Jurie Roux explained the player management rationale for what New Zealand media have described as a "secret" camp.

"It's very simple," Roux said. "I run a multimillion-rand corporation where my biggest assets are my players. They're injured so I need to do something to get them ready for the World Cup.

"What do you do with an injured player? You don't send him to Bali or Mauritius on holiday, you put him into your high-performance centre with the best doctor you can find. The Springbok doctor is here with the Springbok team - and you put him on a programme of rehab to get him back for the World Cup. I don't understand the conspiracy, I don't understand the confusion."

The suggestion was put to Roux that the existence of the Rustenburg camp had been denied.

"I'm not denying they're in Rustenburg," he said. "I'm denying the fact there is a secret training camp. I've got my players being rehabilitated, that's it.

"I would like all those guys to be un-injured but they're injured and they're busy being rehabilitated. I'm not a doctor or a miracle worker," said Jurie.
