Transnet ready for possible strike action

Friday, May 7, 2010

Pretoria - Transport parastatal Transnet has put in place measures for possible strike action scheduled for next week.

In a statement on Thursday, Transnet said that it has already implemented various initiatives to ensure that its customers and shareholders are aware of the potential strike and that its assets and employees are protected against malicious damage.

This as unions namely the SA Trade and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) and the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) want wage increases of 15 percent. Transnet is offering an 8 percent across the board wage increase.

Transnet Group Executive: Human Resources Pradeep Maharaj said the parastatal was satisfied that a market related wage increase was presented to the unions. This included additional benefits on allowances and medical aid.

The parastatal added that to date it has not received a formal notice to strike.

Media reported that the unions (who plan to strike on Monday) as well as Transnet held talks last night to avert the strike, however on Friday morning the unions could not be reached for comment.

Should the strike go ahead the country's freight, rail, pipeline and port services would be affected.
