Two officials disciplined for Bara power outages

Friday, February 7, 2014

Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Health has given warning letters to two employees over power outages at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.

“After careful review of all process and procedures, it was concluded that the two officials failed to execute their duties adequately. The officials were served with written warnings,” spokesperson Simon Zwane said.

Generators failed to kick in last month because they had no diesel, and two of 12 generators had technical problems. This led to the hospital having to reschedule elective operations.

Zwane says working with the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) the hospital is currently implementing various preventative measures to avoid a recurrence of the problem.

“We also have to work closely with City Power and the police to firmly deal with the heartless theft of electricity cables by Izinyoka, which disrupts the supply of electricity to health and other community facilities, with possible dire consequences.”  - SAnews.gov.za
