Two police officers arrested over heists

Pretoria - Two policemen, including a senior crime intelligence policeman, are expected to appear at the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly masterminding a series of heists.

The two, including a sergeant, are part of a group of five charged with armed robbery and attempted murder, the Hawks confirmed.

"I can confirm that the two are members of the police and they are being questioned regarding armed robbery and attempted murder," spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said.

They are allegedly involved in the cash-in-transit heist involving millions in Vaalpark, Sasolburg, in February.

Labelling the case as sensitive, Ramoloko could not confirm what other heists the group had allegedly planned.

"What I can confirm is that the policemen used their work knowledge to commit the crime," Ramaloko said, adding that whoever was responsible would face the law, regardless of their position.

Media is reporting that the group had allegedly planned a heist on trucks transporting gold and bullion to the Reserve Bank. - SAnews.gov.za
