Pretoria - Farm workers are set to receive a wage increase as of next month, according to the Department of Labour.

The department's amendment to the Sectoral Determination of the wages will result in increases in the three rates for farm workers namely hourly, weekly and monthly will rise as of 1 March.

The hourly rate of farm workers will increase from R6.74 to R7.04, while that of the weekly rate will rise from R303.84 to R317.51. The monthly rate will rise from R1 316. 69 to R1 375.94 said the department on Wednesday.

The increases are linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

"The wages in this sector are linked to the Consumer Price Index as the base and at present, it stands at 3.5 percent. The Sectoral Determination the wage increases are determined by utilising the CPI plus 1 percent, and this means that the new minimum wage is 4.5 percent higher than the current minimum wage," departmental spokesperson Page Boikanyo said.

The Director of Inspections and Enforcement Services at the department, Boikie Mampuru, said those who ignored the amendment "will meet the might of the law and will be forced to comply."
