Water supply precarious in Polokwane

Friday, September 23, 2011

Polokwane - Residents of Polokwane are being urged to use water sparingly as the city's reservoirs run low.

Municipal spokesman Simon Mokoatedi said demand was currently higher than supply.

"We are running below 40% at this stage. This means at the moment, demand is higher than supply and if the situation continues ... this will result in low pressure and eventual water shortages in high-lying areas," said Mokoatedi.

He urged residents to refrain from watering their gardens, washing their cars with hoses, filling bathtubs and flushing toilets unnecessarily.

"Residents are encouraged to take shorter showers, not to let taps run while brushing teeth, turn off sink faucets while scrubbing dishes and pots, and use a broom and not a hose to clean driveways and walkways," he said.

Mokoatedi encouraged residents to report water leaks and burst pipes to the municipality as soon they are detected.

He said the municipality gets its water from both the Ebenezer Dam and Dap Naude Dam.

Once treated, the water from Ebenezer Dam supplies Mamabolo, Mothapo and Mankweng before reaching Polokwane city.

Water from Dap Naude Dam supplies Dalmada village before being distributed to communities in and around Polokwane.

To report leaks or burst pipes, residents may call 015 290 2375/76 during work hours or 015 290 2000 after hours. - BuaNews
