Pretoria - Thousands of women in labour have benefitted from the Gauteng's Provincial Government's obstetric ambulances used to transport patients to hospitals and clinics.
According to Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development, 10 703 pregnant women have been transported to health facilities with maternity services in the province's seven obstetric ambulances between January and July 2010.
The obstetric ambulances are equipped with all the necessary equipment to provide quality treatment and care to both mother and child. The staff manning the ambulances are highly qualified in emergency care and are able to handle any complication that may arise en route to the hospital.
"This is one of the Gauteng's Department of Health and Social Development's efforts to reduce neonatal and maternal mortality," the department said, adding that it planned to increase the number of obstetric ambulance from seven to 12 in the current financial year.
The ambulances are used in addition to ordinary and private ambulances.
