Pretoria - Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor will later today acknowledge the country's leading female scientists through the annual Women in Science Awards.
The 2010 Women in Science Awards are part of the department's efforts to increase the number of female scientists and researchers in the country.
They have also been created to increase women's access to research professions in the country as well as profile successful scientists and researchers as role models for younger women and girls.
The categories for the 2010 Women in Science Awards include among others Distinguished Woman Scientist Award (Life Sciences), Distinguished Woman Scientist Award (Academic Excellence in the
Social Sciences or Humanities), Distinguished Young Woman Scientist Award (Life Sciences) and Distinguished Young Woman Researcher Award (Social Sciences or Humanities).
Minister in the Presidency for the National Planning Commission, Trevor Manuel, will be the guest speaker at the awards' gala function to be held in Johannesburg.
