As part of ongoing efforts to provide much needed humanitarian assistance to flood-stricken families under uMkhanyakude District Municipality, Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu will today visit the Inkosi Mtubatuba Local Municipality.
The October floods left a trail of destruction to property and infrastructure, with over 600 households across the province left damaged, including over 130 houses destroyed in Somkhele and KwaMyeki in Mtubatuba.
Some of the houses were completely damaged, leaving families homeless. Residents also lost livestock, including goats, chickens and cows.
The department said the provision of humanitarian assistance is supported by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which is collaborating with Social Development and Action Development to render humanitarian assistance and sustainable livelihoods initiatives. These initiatives are aimed particularly at people with disabilities, child-headed households and older persons.
“With the festive season upon us, this generous donation by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is timely and will assist many of the flood-stricken families who lost everything during the disaster to put food on the table this Christmas as they recover and rebuild their lives,” Zulu said.
The handing over of humanitarian assistance will take place at Ward 15 Mahujini Community Hall, in Mtubatuba. – SAnews.gov.za
