Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has wished the Muslim community a happy Eid ul-Fitr.

In a statement, Zuma's spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said the 30 days of fasting undertaken by Muslims during Ramadan required immense spiritual devotion and sacrifice. "During this month the Muslim communities willfully endure the plight experienced by the poor on a daily basis," he said.

Throughout Ramadan, Muslims collect and hand out zakat-ul-fitr, gifts to the needy, and this aspect involves non-Muslims as well to be part of this celebration.

The spirit of working together to assist those less fortunate is exemplary and contributes immensely to building compassion, selflessness, sacrifice, unity and social cohesion, the President said.
